2018/19 Newsletter #2

President’s Update

With our preseason training underway for our Juniors, its great to see the enthusiasm of those who have braved the elements to jump in the pool and dust off some cob webs.  Over the next week, or so, I expect that we will see even more Juniors in the pool, as commitments around winter season sports end and the weather warms up.  It won’t be long before our older members (yes you Seniors), will be throwing on the bathers and re-familiarising themselves with the fine arts of water polo and I look forward to seeing you all poolside.  As for our FlippaBallers, they can take it easy until our first “Come & Try” day, which will be held on the last Thursday of the term, followed by another one on the first Thursday of Term 4 (see FlippaBall section for more details). You will find some important information below about the upcoming season, so I ask that you take the time to read through it and make sure you note down key dates and times around training, games and registrations.

Registration & Fees

Registration Reminder

Registrations are now open for the 2018/19 season.

This year Water Polo Australia has moved to a new membership and database provider, revolutionseSPORT and introduced a new online registration system called “MemberPool“.  All members will be required to register through this new system for the 2018/19 season.  In this first season of using MemberPool members will be required to fill in all of their details, however in future years, most of these details will be pre-populated based on your national identification number.

Please click here to be taken to the MemberPool registration page.

Team nominations for the Junior and Senior State Leagues must be made to Water Polo WA by 14th September. We ask that all our Juniors and Seniors please register asap (i.e. today), so that we have time to determine the number of teams for each competition and division, that we need to nominate. Late registrations may result in players being allocated to a team and/or division that is not their first preference.

Please note that a merchant fee is charged by revolutionseSPORT for all registrations and this is shown on your receipt:

  • Pin Payments (preferred provider) – 2.0% + $1.60 AUD per transaction.
  • PayPal – 2.6% + $1.63 AUD per transaction.

This year we have had to increase fees, primarily as a result of increased costs associated with State and National body capitation fees and pool hire.  Fees are set at a level that enables the club to breakeven, based on our estimates of membership numbers and associated costs.

The fees for the 2018/19 season are as follows:

  • FlippaBall = $230
  • Juniors = $345
  • Seniors  = $345
  • Seniors Training Only = $150

As mentioned in the last newsletter, we are adopting a rebranded and fresh approach to our FlippaBall program this upcoming season.  Some of the changes you will notice are:
is the skills development component of our program and forms the basis for how we intend to run our Thursday afternoon training sessions.  The objectives of FlippaSkills are to develop the skills and confidence to participate in FlippaBall games/competitions and to eventually progress to playing in the Junior State League.  Jeremy Carbone (NWPPA Head Coach) will be structuring our training sessions to meet these objectives and will also be mentoring our Junior coaches in how they deliver this.  Water Polo Australia’ s FlippaSkills resources include: an Achievement Tracker; as well as Encouragement and Completion Certificates and we hope to be able to introduce them this season also.
is a modified, non-contact social competition using developmental rules targeted at participants below 12 years of age and forms the basis of how we intend to run our competition.  The objectives of FlippaBall are to:

  • provide a safe and age appropriate introduction to the sport of water polo;
  • introduce water polo skills, movements and tactics to juniors in a nationally consistent manner to develop the correct skills in players;
  • give everybody the opportunity to play water polo – regardless of their ability, or awareness of the sport; and
  • deliver an engagement tool for clubs, coaches, families and communities to connect and enjoy the sport of water polo.
A big change for this season is that we will now be running our own FlippaBall competition, on Saturdays at the Newman College pool, with games scheduled to run between 11:15am and 12:30pm (actual time slots to be determined based on number of teams). The committee and I believe that this has some great advantages for our members and the club overall, including:
  • Better control on how we manage and deliver our FlippaBall program.
  • Convenient and familiar location with easier parking options.
  • No pool entry fees.
  • Room to grow our FlippaBall program and attract new members.
  • Nice, inviting and relaxed location (not open to the general public).
  • Upgraded pool and clubroom facilities.
  • Ability to run a BBQ at the pool deck and potentially have our own canteen for the provision of tea/coffee and snacks.
  • A controlled environment to help develop our Junior coaches and referees in.

The committee is also planning on speaking to other clubs to organise some inter club competitions and will provide further details as they become known.

We would love to see all of our FlippaBall members from last season, back down at the pool this season, to continue their water polo skills development journey, or to make the move into our Juniors program.  We would also like to encourage as many new FlippaBall members as possible, so if your child has some friends that might be interested in getting involved (even forming their own team), or you know some other children that also might be interested in playing, then please let them know about our program. You can forward this newsletter onto them, or direct them to our website (www.newmanwaterpolo.asn.au), or they can send an email to flippaball@newmanwaterpolo.asn.au if they have any questions.

We also have two come and try days (see info on the right) which new members can come along to (for free), to see how they like FlippaBall.  It would be great to have as many of our existing FlippaBall members as possible come along to these two days also, so that they can show the potential new members what it’s all about. Additionally, I would like to ask all club members to get behind our FlippaBall program and promote it widely, to help make the program and the club, as successful as possible.

Adam Wheeler – President and acting FlippaBall Coordinator

U16 Boys National Club Championships

A reminder that the U16 Boys National Aged Club Championships are fast approaching and we have a team of 13 players who will be competing in Perth for Newman Water Polo Club. The event details are:

Dates: Tuesday 2nd October 2018 to Sunday 7th October 2018
Venues: HBF Stadium, Bicton Pool and UWA Pool

The team of boys have been training extremely hard over the winter season. Jeremy Carbone (Coach) has noticed a huge improvement in both skill and fitness and is very impressed with the commitment and enthusiasm shown by all the players. We are very lucky to have drafted a number of boys to make up our squad of 13 including:

Jaydon from Cockburn Water Polo Club
Sam from Queensland
Solomon from City Beach/UWA
Gihad from City Beach/UWA
Luka from City Beach/UWA

It would be great for the team to have a huge cheer squad and I encourage all of you to go down to the venues and support the boys during the competition. As the fixtures are published we will send them out to members so you know when the games are scheduled. I am planning in a day trip from Lancelin to go and watch and really looking forward to it – so see you there!

I am really looking forward to seeing every-one back at the pool and please get in touch if you have any questions or enquiries
