A big welcome back to all our members for the second part of the water polo season. The committee and I hope you all had a safe and fantastic Christmas and we look forward to seeing everyone back down at the pool over the coming weeks.
You will find below some important information about when training and games resume, so please take the time to read the relevant section (i.e. FlippaBall, Juniors, Seniors) for all the details.
I am currently in Brisbane and have had the opportunity to watch my daughter, Danielle and one of her friends, Ameilia, participating in the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships, as part of a combined U16 Girls Newman/North Coast/Draft players, team. This has been a great event to see first-hand and to witness the high level of skills and competition and the great spirit in which the games have been played. I know our girls have been having a great week bonding with their team mates and playing and experiencing some fantastic water polo.
In addition, we had our own team of U14 Girls participating in this same event the week before and from what I have heard, they had an awesome experience. The week started out pretty tough for them, with games against some highly ranked teams, before being pooled with teams of similar skill levels. Once in their pool they played some very competitive games and one goal separated them from playing for the top spot in this pool. Their coach, Sam Dobney, had the following to say about the team:
“The improvement they showed on field was outstanding and in addition the relationships they conjured towards each other gave this team a lot of character. I am very proud of what the team has become and I am very much looking forward to see how they hold up in the Monday night competition after this experience they have gained from the week away. As a club the girls served the Newman name brilliantly.”
I would like to congratulate all of the girls for representing our club so well and hope that the experience and new skills they developed while away will inspire them going forwards.
The committee and I would like to thank Sam for his fantastic efforts in coaching and mentoring the girls in the lead up to the event and while at the tournament. I take my hat off to him, as dealing with a bunch of U14 girls would terrify me, but Sam takes it all in his stride and has deservedly earned the respect of the girls. In addition, I would like to thank the Team Managers, Rick Berwick and Karina Riskas, for their tireless efforts in organising and managing this trip. A lot of work goes into making a trip to an event like this happen and it is only through the efforts of people like Rick and Karina who selflessly volunteered their time that we can do this successfully. A big thank you goes out to the other parents who also helped make this trip a success, whether it was undertaking the table duties at the tournament, or cooking BBQs for fundraising, or organising uniforms, etc, etc.
It is through the efforts of all our volunteers, that we have such a great club and I strongly encourage as many parents to get involved in some capacity, so that we can continue to grow the club and make it even greater and stronger.
One last item from me and that is a reminder that as we head back down to the pool can all parents please remember that siblings are not permitted in the pool at any time, if not a member of the club. In addition, members are only to be in the pool during their allotted session. We thank you for your understanding and assistance with this, in order to avoid any potential problems.
Our FlippaBall program resumes with training on Thursday 7th February, followed by games on Saturday 9th February. We are organising to host games against teams from Triton Water Polo club, during one of our upcoming Saturday games sessions and potentially another club also, on a separate date. Further details will be provided soon. In addition, at the end of the season there is the Water Polo WA SunSmart FlippaBall competition. This competition is scheduled for Sunday 17th March and it would be great to enter some teams into this event, which involves playing teams from other clubs in a round-robin competition. We had one team participate last year and by all accounts, it was a fantastic day. We will send out further details and ask for expressions of interest in the coming weeks.
Training commences – Thu 7th Feb
Games commence – Sat 9th Feb
Last training – Thu 14th Mar
Last games – Sat 16th Mar

WPWA SunSmart FlippaBall competition – Sun 17th Mar
Our Juniors resume training next week and hopefully everyone is refreshed and super keen to hit the pool again. Let’s make every game count in the run to the end of season and put into practice all of the learnings/training from your coaches and your experiences from the first half of the season. It would be great to see everyone turn up to as many training sessions as possible, to help you and your teams finish on a high.
Most of you should hopefully have received an email from your team Managers with the details below, but if not here are the key dates for the remainder of the season:
