Newsletter #1 (Sept 17)

Welcome Back !

Things are starting to ramp up for the 2017/18 season.

Presidents Update

It’s been great to see everyone back down at the pool for the start of the 2107/18 season and I have been very pleased and encouraged with the numbers of Juniors that have attended the first two training sessions. In addition, we had a great turnout to our first Seniors “come and try” day, last Sunday and I was in admiration at the resilience and determination shown, in particular by the new people, to last the distance of a 2 hour training session.  I am pretty certain that there would have been a few sore muscles over the following days, but it certainly looked like everyone had a great time.  We also kick off our Flippaball activities this week, with a “come and try” day this Thursday (see below for more details) and it would be great to see as many new faces as possible coming to see and experience what Flippaball is all about. Please let your friends know and invite them down to Hale School Pool and for those that played last year we would love to see you come to the session and help out showing the new kids what this great game is all about.

Please make sure you don’t miss important information contained here in this newsletter regarding training times (there has been a change for some U14 girls); referee and coaching courses; school holiday training camp and bathers and mouthguards. In addition, you will find profiles of our coaches, for those who are keen to know a bit more about those mysterious characters that are barking the orders from the pool edge.  I would also like to remind everyone to get your registration organised, if you haven’t done so already, as our early bird fees end on 28 Sept, 2017.

The committee and I look forward to a fun and exciting 2017/18 season and it certainly has started off really well.  See you all down at the pool and please, if you have any questions, then just ask one of our committee members, or fire off an email to one of our email accounts (which can be found on our website,newmanwaterpolo.asn.au, under the Contact page).

Juniors
Our Committee and Coaches were amazed at the turnout to Juniors training over the last few weeks, given that winter sports are still finishing up. Thank you to the parents for juggling things to get your child along to Hale pool. We are in the process of working out how many teams we will have and what Divisions they will be placed in so if you can get to the next 2 Thursdays that would be very helpful to the coaches. If you are not returning we would appreciate you letting us know as we only have a few weeks to provide team lists to WA Water Polo.
Please come along to the timeslot for your age group below. A reminder not to park in the top carpark next to the pool as this is restricted to Hale school staff.

Seniors
Our first seniors come and try day was a fantastic success. We had over 20 players in the pool under the very skilful direction of one of Newman’s favourite coaches, Jeremy. I was particularly delighted to see 6 of our dads join in. The session included a rigorous warm up, teaching drills and a game.  It catered for a range of capabilities and fitness levels. Everyone had fun.

Given the level of interest we have had we are going to offer a registration package for seniors who would like to train weekly and play a social game fortnightly. This is aimed at people who would like to get fit and don’t want to play or can’t commit to a competitive league. We train on Sunday afternoons at Claremont and run a game each fortnight.

Please contact me if you need any information.

Meet Our Coaches

NWPPA is very pleased to introduce you to our wonderful team of Senior Coaches for the 2017/2018 Water Polo season. A brief introduction to each coach can be found below:
Jeremy Carbone
For those who don’t know Jeremy stay tuned for his profile in the next newsletter.
Lorenzo Cenci
Lorenzo has more than 18 years of professional playing career in Italy prior to his arrival in Australia. He has coached junior boys and girls teams in Florence for many years beside his athlete career. He began coaching in Australia in 2015 and has been coaching at WAIS as specialist goalkeeper coach and substitute coach. He has also coached at Dolphins WPC in the last two seasons as Head Coach for the men’s program. Lorenzo brings great passion and experience into the program and will be able to support both field players and goalkeepers very well to step up to a new level.
Sam Dobney
Sam began his water polo career playing when he was 7 years of age and since then has loved the sport. He started playing for Dolphins WPC and then Christ Church Grammar school. This last season he played in the U18 competition. The coming 2017/2018 season sees Sam moving into the next stage playing for a Premier League team. This is Sam’s first year coaching at Newman WPC and he is excited to be a part of this clubs excitement and growth.
Ed Slade (Specialist Coach)
Ed has over 13 years playing water polo at the highest level – professionally in Spain, National League and National Men’s team. Recently Ed was selected as a member of the Aussie Sharks as goal keeper and was part of the team winning gold at the 2017 FINA World League tournament. More recently he travelled to Budapest representing Australia in the FINA World Championships. Ed has been a valuable coach at Newman WPC for the past two years and helped develop our Flippaball program and coached the first state junior league teams into the competition. With the increasing demand of preparing for the Tokyo Olympics, Ed will this season be assisting us with specialist training programs and leave relief.
