Newsletter #4 (Nov17)

Greetings to all Newman Water Polo Families

Presidents Update

Hopefully everyone is starting to get into a rhythm with their training and games, now that the season is well underway. Our Flippaballers are having a lot of fun in the water and it’s great to see their skills improving from week to week.  The Juniors teams have completed the grading period and the divisions for the State Junior League should all be sorted and stable now.  It has been great to see the level of turnout at training so far this year and I would strongly encourage all players to make as many sessions as possible. At this end of the season our coaches are really focussed on building player fitness, before moving onto developing skills and games plans.  So keep up the great work at training and the rewards will come on game day!  It’s also wonderful to see that our two women’s and one men’s teams are doing well in their respective competitions and I am sure the cob webs are falling off more and more each week.  Well done to all involved!
For those of you who were at the Junior’s season launch a month or so ago, you might remember that I talked about how I would like to focus on Respect this season for our club. Following on from this I thought I would take the opportunity to elaborate further, with some examples of how I think we can demonstrate this and start to embed it within our club culture.  Here’s a few ideas that I think would be great for our players to undertake if they are not already doing so:
  • Training – on arrival at training, go and say hello to your coach to let them know you are there.  During the session, stay focused on what the coach is asking you to do and train with maximum effort. At the end of training thank your coach for the session.
  • Games – once again, say hello to your coach on arrival. During the game stay focused and put in 100% effort.  At the end of the game thank your coach for the game; shake the opposition team’s hands and thank them for the game; and thank the referees for officiating the match.
  • General – if you are not able to make training or a game, please let your team manager know in advance (Flippaballers please let the Flippaball coordinators, Kerrie and Claire know).
This list is by no means exhaustive, but I thought it could serve as a start and I ask all parents of Junior and Flippaball players to help us encourage them to demonstrate these behaviours and help the club to build a strong culture, with Respect at its core.  It also goes without saying, that our senior players should be demonstrating these behaviours as well and leading by example.

Competitions

Flippaball

Even though it wasn’t the best weather last Thursday or Friday we saw a great turn out for both training and the games.  Flippaball is designed to promote participation and skill development in a fun environment and with all games closely contested last week we could see the enjoyment and improvement from all of our Flippaballers.  Well done everyone !
Throughout the season we will need to move players around to accommodate different standards, friendships and attendance.  We thank you for your patience and understanding when this occurs. If your child is unable to play on Friday nights please let Claire or Kerrie know.

For all players who are in the first session there is always an opportunity to play a game in the second session with the next level of players and age groups.  Last week we had five players take advantage of this second session who all performed well and enjoyed their second game.  If your son or daughter would like to participate in the second session please let Claire or Kerrie know as early as possible.

After a busy bee on Sunday upstairs at Beatty Park, the deck area has certainly lost its Halloween decorations and is looking fantastic and ready for everyone to come up and share a drink and a burger.

With such an unexpected turn out last week after the games we unfortunately sold out of all of the burgers and hotdogs.  Our apologies to those who missed out.  We have increased the order this week so hopefully some of our very tired and hungry players and their parents can all enjoy the hospitality.

A big thank you to our volunteers cooking and serving the burgers and sausages to everyone, you have been doing a fabulous job with some volunteers even taking on the task both weeks.  There are three more dates left for 2017 where Newman Water Polo Club is responsible for the BBQ.  We are still looking for more volunteers for 10th Nov, 24th Nov and 8th Dec.  Please let Claire or Kerrie know if you can help out on one or more of these Fridays.

We look forward to seeing you all at the pool on Friday evening with fantastic weather forecast.

Nationals Update

The National Club Championship for 2018 will bring over 2500 competitors from various different clubs all over Australia to compete across all age groups from U12 through to U18’s in multiple locations.

Teams will be competing to secure the overall title of the 2018 National Aged Champions within their age group.  If teams miss out on progressing through to the preliminary round robin stage then they will have the opportunity to play off in a series of games for the Shield, Bowl and Plate finals.

Newman Water Polo Players Association would like to encourage our members to participate in these championships.  It not only helps to improve your skills and abilities it also helps to develop your love of the sport and have a wonderful time with friends.  As teams are graded over the first few games the competition offers an opportunity for both very experienced and developing players to be involved.

Indicative costs range from between $2000 to $2500 per player and we encourage teams to fundraise which can easily reduce this cost by half.
