Presidents Update

Well things are certainly starting to warm up, both weather wise and with the level of competition in the pool.  Hopefully all teams are settling into a rhythm, with some good match fitness being developed and we can now start to focus on improving skills and water polo tactics.  Our coaches will be starting to work on these things and we hope to supplement this with some rule explanations/refreshers, in particular for our Flippaballers and Juniors.

I would like to take this opportunity to encourage any of our Juniors who are interested in attending the National Club Championships (Nationals) next year to please contact our Nationals Coordinator, Tanya (teamparnell@iinet.net.au), to express an interest.  We would like to identify the level of interest so that we can start planning and preparing as early as possible.  As a club we would ideally like to be able to send boys and girls U14s and U16s teams to the Nationals.  A trip to the Nationals is a wonderful experience, both in terms of the competition and the team bonding that occurs.  Obviously, there is a cost associated with a trip to the Nationals and this is one of the reasons that we want to start planning early, so that we can look at minimising the costs through fundraising activities.

Can I please remind parents that while our training sessions are taking place siblings (who aren’t players) need to be supervised at all times around the pool area.  Please do not allow them to run around the pool deck and/or climb on fences as we do not want to have any accidents occur.  In addition, while we are utilising the Hale Pool facilities I ask that you please keep all children within the pool area and not running around through the Hale grounds.  We have only hired the large pool area and do not want to jeopardise our use of this facility.  Also, one last reminder, please do not enter the pool through the swim school entry, as we have been asked only to use the gate in the middle of the pool area due to duty of care requirements.

For all players, please remember to let your team manager know if you are unable to attend training, or a game.  Your team manager should also be your first point of contact for all matters relating to the team.  Good luck to everyone for your upcoming games and continue to have fun in the pool!

Flippaball

We have been treated to some great weather both at training and the games over the last few weeks and attendance has been fantastic.  Each week we can see the players improving and enjoying their introduction to water polo.  With the change of grading the opportunity for our flippaballers to get two games and some experience with the more experienced players is now available and it is good to see a few taking advantage of this.

Thank you to the parents that have been letting us know when their children will not be at the game and/or training.  The early notice makes it easier to plan for.  With the first game kicking off at 5:40pm we really like to have the players there at 5:20pm to read the sheets to see which coloured caps they are wearing and in which pool they are playing.  That way we can get them in the pool and warming up ready for the start of the game.

A big thank you to everyone who has helped with the BBQ over the last three Newman roster weeks, particularly those who have helped a few times.  We only have two left for the entire season as we don’t have to look after this in term one.  At this stage we only have two volunteers for 24 November 2017 (and one of those volunteers is our senior coach who we would definitely prefer poolside) and one for the final week 8 December 2017.  If you can just offer a short stint upstairs to help out that would be greatly appreciated.

With Christmas fast approaching we are putting in an order for flippaballs which maybe a good idea as a stocking filler for your budding water polo stars.  If you are interested in purchasing a ball please let me know and I will add your name to the orders.

See you all poolside!

Fantastic Achievement by one of our U/16 boys
Sam Carroll (Orcas) and his dad Steve were recently recognised by the Surf Life Saving Australia for the heroic rescue of a woman off Gnaraloo Bay in April this year. They were awarded individual certificates of merit at Surf Life Saving Awards ceremony held Sydney on 4 November. Well done Sam on this great achievement. If you would like to read more, please visit this link.

It was a great gathering at the Floreat Surf club after Sunday training two weeks ago. The casual atmosphere with spectacular views of the ocean allowed everyone to catch up outside of the pool for a drink and chat.

Introducing Oliver Fonda

Water Polo CV of Oliver Fonda

Oliver was born and raised in Hungary where water polo is a truly national sport. After arriving to Australia (within weeks) he joined the Triton Water Polo Club where he still plays as one of their senior members. His team mates over the years included Paul and Mark Oberman, Richard Pengelly and Glen Townsend, all Australian Olympic players. Oliver’s teams have won several state championships in Perth over his long career, whilst he was voted “best and fairest” in his division two years in the row at age 45 and 46. He also represented the Australian water polo community in several World Masters Games held in Perth (WA), Montreal (Canada), Boras (Sweden), and recently in Budapest (Hungary). His highest achievement was winning gold at the Masters Olympics held in Sydney in 2009 as a member of the Hungarian national team.
